What is Local Exhaust Ventilation?

Local Exhaust Ventilation (commonly known as LEV) is an engineering control designed to prevent or reduce the level of hazardous substances being breathed by employees in the workplace. Systems usually consist of an inlet such as a booth, hood or cabinet placed close to or around the release point of an airborne hazardous substance. The device is connected via fixed or flexible ducting to the inlet of a fan. The contaminated air is then discharged to atmosphere or back into the workplace after undergoing some form of cleaning or filtration.

What Are Your Legal Requirements?

Regulation 9 of the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) states that all engineering controls provided by an employer should be maintained in an efficient state, be in efficient working order and in good repair. It further states that employers must ensure that thorough examination and testing of these controls are carried out at regular intervals (usually at least every 14 months) and suitable records are kept. The employer needs to appoint a competent person to carry out the thorough examination and testing.
