What is a Occupational Exposure Monitoring?

Many people are exposed to a variety of substances at work such as chemicals, vapours, fumes, dusts and fibres which may be classified as hazardous to health. Several diseases associated with hazardous substances may not appear until several years after first exposure. It is important therefore to know in advance how to protect employee's health. In order to determine how to protect workers from such substances, the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations impose duties on employers to monitor its employees exposure to hazardous substances.

What Are Your Legal Requirements?

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations employers have a legal duty to assess the risk to health created by work involving substances hazardous to health (Regulation 6), and if required the employer shall ensure that the exposure of employees to substances hazardous to health is monitored in accordance with a suitable procedure (Regulation 10). The Health and Safety Commission (HSC) issue a list of legally binding Workplace Exposure Limits (WELs) in the document EH/40. WELs are occupational exposure limits set under COSHH, in order to help protect the health of workers.

A WEL is described as the "maximum concentration of an airborne substance averaged over a reference period, to which employees may be exposed to by inhalation". Where a WEL has been set, there is a requirement for employees to take all reasonable precautions and exercise due diligence to reduce exposures as far below the limit as reasonably practicable.
How Can We Help?

TEAMS Limited are able to offer a complete range of occupational exposure monitoring strategies to identify, assess and control risks to workers health and to assess indoor air quality. All occupational exposure monitoring is carried out using HSE, NIOSH or OSHA validated methods and will provide data to allow comparison with HSE Workplace Exposure Limits as stated in EH40.

Substances commonly monitored include:

•  Nuisance Dusts (Inhalable and Respirable)
•  Solvent Vapours
•  Isocyanates
•  Welding Fume
•  Acid Gases
•  Formaldehyde
•  Resin Acids
•  Metal Fumes
•  Diesel Fume

The above list is not exhaustive. Please contact us to discuss your exact requirements. For further information contact us on (0151) 2579302, by e-mail at info@teamsnorth.co.uk or fill out a contact us form from the above menu.
